Velvet Crush

Velvet it dramatic and rich, yet soft and comfortable.  I love the way a velvet looks in your home (also on your feet!)

My favorite velvet pieces inlude this gorgeous sofa by Jonathan Adler and these simple throw pillows from Crate & Barrell

Style Crush: Bierly-Drake

I have had one big style crush on Boston-based design firm Bierly & Drake for as long as I can remember.  They have such a sophisticated aesthetic that somehow still looks youthful and fun. They embrace traditional elements from the past with a modern twist. It is easy to see why they have won countless awards and have been featured in millions of publications… their work is truly divine!

And the award goes to…..

I loved the Oscars last night…. every glamorous and glorious second of it!  My favorite part (as always) was seeing all the lovely starlets looking their absolute best.  I think that everyone looked so beautiful, but there were some who just took my breath away.

My absolute favorite celebrity of the night was Gwyneth Paltrow.  Tom Forn is a genius! Swoon….

White was huge on the red carpet this year, I also loved Octavia Spencer in Tadashi and Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab.  They really represent true hollywood glamour.

Stacy Keibler looked stunning.  I mean, could she possibly be any more gorgeous? And her dress was just incredible.

Lots of ladies rocked metallics.  Jessica Chastain looked stunning in her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress.  Her hair and make up were beautiful and that dress was tdf.

I loved Ellie Kemper in her copper Armani Prive and Giuliana Rancic in silver Tony Ward.

It looks like our favorite (or least favorite?) Hills star, Kristin Cavallari, scored a ticket to the oscars.  She looked beautiful and is definitely rocking her pregnancy glow.

There weren’t too many total misses this year.  However, I was disappointed with Angelina Jolie.  On one hand, she is Angelina and is basically responsible for creating most fashion trends, but on the other hand, this whole look is boring.  I definitely expected more from her.

This dress is one of my favorites, but someone with a figure as beautiful as Shailene Woodley should not be so covered up especially at an event like the Oscars.  I am all for modesty, but this is just matronly.

Before the Oscars, I was really excited to see what Emma Stone was wearing, but felt that this Giambattista Valli gown was a let down.  Again, the dress is beautiful, but it just doesn’t work on Emma.  The style, color and cut overwhelm her.

Natalie Portman wore a red polka-dot vintage Christian Dior gown. What was she thinking? She is always one of my favorites, but I just.don’t.like.this.

Lastly, a few other beautiful ladies on the red carpet….not my favorites, but still lovely none-the-less.

Pastels

Maybe it’s the Spring-like weather we’ve had lately or just my love for all things soft and somewhat neutral, but I am really feeling pastels today.

Bamboo Motif

I am completely devoted to bamboo motif furniture.  Something about it reminds me of cocktails in Palm Beach villas. A touch of bamboo makes a glamorous yet timeless addition to any home (in any location!)

Area Rug Buying Guide

This August, I moved into a new apartment and in the process, I invested in a few new pieces of furniture.  One of the things I bought was a gorgeous heathered area rug from Restoration Hardware. I absolutely love it, except somehow I mismeasured my living room and the rug is about a foot too small for the space.  The fact that it’s just slightly off in size literally drives me in.sane.

Of course there are always exceptions, but the general rule when looking for the perfect sized area rug is to make sure it is large enough to comfortably fit all of your furniture. I find these Rug Size Guide’s by Lisa Ferguson really helpful.

Here are some examples of perfectly sized area rugs.  In a living room, it should extend behind the couch, chairs, tables and all other pieces of furniture.

The same rule applies for the dining room.  You should be able to pull out all chairs from the table while the chair legs remain on the carpet.

Choosing an area rug for the bedroom is slightly more complex.  Visit The Decor Mentor website for more area rug buying guides.

Tiles Galore!

When I first saw these ikat bathrooms, I thought they were wallpapered.  However, upon closer inspection, I realized it was a tile mosaic. You can do some pretty amazing things with tiles these days.  Designers like Ann Sacks and Sara Baldwin have really taken mosaics to the next level.  I am completely in love with these tile deisgns!

Grey + Yellow

Ever since I saw images of this exquisite home in Lake Como I have not been able to stop thinking about grey and yellow.  I love the surprising effect of bright yellow next to the subdued shades of grey.  This color combo was a hit in 2011 and so far, it looks like its popularity is continuing.  I personally, cannot get enough of it!

Basic Black

On days when I’m just feeling uninspired, I always default to basic black. On this rainy (yet unseasonably warm) Friday morning, I am definitely going for the all black look today…

Clash Course: Pink + Red

For me, love is still in the air and Valentine’s Day is lingering a little bit.  I am really into the whole hot pink and red combo right now. It slightly reminds me of an oversized Valentine…in a good way!
